Kitchen Remodeling
Mt. Laurel, NJ – Hooten Rd.
This client came to us because their kitchen was small, did not function well for them, and was dark. Their old colonial style house was very closed off and boxy, and they wanted a more modern open concept. Taking an older house and turning it into an open concept house is challenging. The old kitchen design was a big bottleneck, with people bumping into each other. But our designer Anne van de Rijn, and project manager Shawn Mertz, teamed up with the ideal solution for the house. Now they have a lot more space and the flow is much better.
Anne came up with a design to remove the wall between the dining and kitchen and incorporate a peninsula in place of the wall. This really opened the space up, and the half wall between the family room and kitchen became a breakfast bar with easy viewing of the newly designed family room area.
Anne also worked with her clients to replace their dark wood cabinets with light transitional style cabinetry. Doing this brightened the kitchen and made it much more stylish. Her countertop design (brown fantasy granite) brought in gray, taupe, and blue tones which accented nicely with the soft tones of the backsplash. The backsplash was created using a matte finish 2” x 10” subway tile.
A luxury vinyl floor was used throughout the downstairs to tie all the rooms together.
The original fireplace was red brick and was replaced by a stylish ledger stone called Silver Travertine, which was carried to the ceiling. The new fireplace stone, new hearth, and new mantel really created a dramatic focal point in the room and made a huge difference.

Cipriani covered everything with the design and build process. I like having the designer working with the people doing the remodeling work. Anne and Shawn were well coordinated. Anne was really flexible and worked within our schedule – even nights and weekends. She was really great to work with. Shawn was also really good. He actually brought in a big table, a microwave, a hot plate, and a little convection oven and set up a make-shift kitchen in the living room. Everywhere the dust, dirt, and mess were being worked on he had up plastic sheeting, so the rest of the house stayed clean. – Glenn Schwartz
