2014 MAME Award-Winning Project Best Residential Addition under $100,000

These empty nesters loved their charming “Four Square” in Collingswood, but needed more space on the main floor.  Their existing “TV Rowedmann beforeom” was located on the second floor.  The new Media Room/Den Addition is built over an existing deck, with added pier footings for strength & stability.  It features a spacious cathedral ceiling with an arched window atop three larger windows overlooking the backyard.  On the side wall, three more windows are elevated to provide light, as well as privacy.  Hand-scraped rustic hardwood floors are in keeping with the classic charm of the adjacent dining room and the rest of the existing home.

Coordinating selections on the exterior blend the “old with the new”, creating the illusion that the addition is part of the original home.  Open access to the new room was gained by removing an existing window that overlooked their former deck.  The addition includes a new entry to the backyard and grilling area.  To provide further continuity, the new storm door matches the one on the front of the home.  The new addition was designed to have a high ceiling and lots of light.  The placement of the windows gives the added benefit of privacy, without sacrificing windows.  A remote-control lit ceiling fan provides additional comfort in warmer months, while a new fireplace beneath the LED TV adds cozy warmth in the winter.  They love it!
