When it’s time to remodel, who do you call?

Undertaking a renovation of your home is not an every day occurrence.  It’s a daunting prospect to embark on something so unfamiliar to most homeowners.  So if you need an updated kitchen or bath or need to enlarge the living area, what do you do first?  And how do you decide what kind of expert you need?  No one answer fits all situations but here is a general guideline on the various professionals and how they might help you with your project.

Architects are professionals trained in engineering and design theory.  They have experience dealing with building codes which often change and must be kept current.  Architects usually have broad experience so they can bring different ideas and suggestions to the table.  They also are familiar with the construction of your home and are able to design the new space to work well with the existing space.

Sometimes architects serve as the project manager and oversee the actual construction.  This can be expensive since architects typically charge a percentage of the total cost of the project to manage it which would be in addition to the cost to design the plan and prepare construction drawings for the project.

Interior Designers are also experts at a particular aspect of the project.  They are trained to understand traffic flow, use of space and materials.  Their main contribution is in understanding a homeowner’s style preferences so they can help select the right finishes and colors to pull together any size project.  Interior designers are not typically trained in the more structural aspects of a project so the fees paid here are for a specific expertise.  It is also unusual for a designer to act as a project manager on a large or complicated project.

Design Build Contractors are experienced in construction.  The good ones have structural expertise so they can advise you during the planning process of the implications of various ideas and help you decide if you need a full-service architect.  They also have product knowledge and keep up on the latest technologies.  They can show you the many choices that are available so you can choose which ones will best fit your budget.  They also serve as project managers providing schedules for the work to be done and coordinating the specialty contractors such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters.  Design Build Contractors do not have the high level technical expertise of an architect or the specific design sensibilities of an interior designer.  They have a broad understanding of both and can recommend when a project needs this extra level of involvement.

Cipriani Remodeling Solutions is a design build contractor.  We work with both architects and interior designs, as the project requires, ensuring that each renovation gets the level of expertise it requires.  For over 30 years, we have worked with homeowners to determine the right design for their home and their budget.  We also understand the effect that a major renovation has on the people living in the home so we make every effort to contain and minimize that impact.

Cipriani Remodeling Solutions is the expert you need, the craftsmen you want and the partner you trust.

Local Businesspeople on the Board to create Boys & Girls Club in Woodbury

May, 2011 – Woodbury, NJ – After working for about a year to establish a new boys and girls club in Woodbury, the club committee found renewed energy while visiting the Paulsboro Boys & Girls Club last week.  Local children come to the Paulsboro Club House daily from 3-6 PM and engage in positive activities and get a hot meal.  “These kids were clearly benefiting from the great connection that exists between them and the director,” says Jay Cipriani, who is on the Board to create the new club.  “We want to provide the same opportunity to children in Woodbury to play, learn computers and benefit from great mentoring.”

Cipriani joined the Board about a year ago as it began its work to open a new Boys & Girls club here.  And it’s been a busy year finding the right location, interviewing for the director role and of course, fundraising.  Enthusiasm among the board members which includes town committee members, citizens and local businesspeople is high and they are looking forward to their big event in June to raise money for the new club and recognize John Michael Paz as the Boys & Girls Club Citizen of the Year.

The Board will host the Woodbury Community Cocktail Party on Wednesday, June 8, from 5:30 – 7:30 PM at Nicolosi’s Catering, 1 Hessian Avenue, Woodbury.  There are a few sponsorship opportunities remaining along with tickets to attend and support the new club.  Contact Jeff or Theresa Morris at 856-845-4980 for more information.

Jack of All Trades, Master of Many!

The real expression is “Jack of all trades, master of none” but when it comes to remodeling, using a “general remodeler” may be a better solution than hiring a ‘specialist.’

Specialists in roofing, siding, flooring or bathtubs are definitely experienced in their particular trade. They know their products, know how they are expected to perform and how they will look when installed. Any time you focus on one thing, you can become the expert with more knowledge than anyone else about that one thing.

Houses are complicated. They are made up of millions of pieces and parts that together must be strong, safe, comfortable and efficient. And they are not built in a factory so they are imperfect.

The benefit in hiring a general remodeler when you just want new siding, for example, is that a general remodeler will understand all the components of your home and how they have to work together to achieve that strong, safe, comfortable and efficient structure. How the windows were installed will impact how you side around them because there is more than one way to do this. How the roof was installed will impact how you fasten gutters and soffits. How the kitchen cabinets were installed will impact the choice of the new flooring. For instance, if you select a thick tile and install it on a high wet bed, your cabinets will now seem too short in comparison. Everything is connected!

Anytime you hire a contractor, make sure you are hiring one that stays up to date on the latest products and installation techniques by regularly attending seminars and training employees. Make sure they are properly certified. And make sure they understand the impact of the project being proposed on all aspects of that complicated building that happens to be your home.

Cipriani Remodeling Solutions to host a Blood Drive in Woodbury, NJ

October 2010 – Woodbury, NJ  – “The Red Cross does not need blood – patients do. Every two seconds someone in America gets a blood transfusion. Five million patients will need blood this year.”[1]

And it doesn’t take a disaster for blood to be needed.  People need blood every day and since donated blood has a limited shelf life, it’s critical to replenish the supply throughout the year.

That’s why Cipriani Remodeling Solutions is hosting a Blood Drive on Friday, October 22 from 12:00 noon until 6:00 PM at their office at 665 North Broad St. in Woodbury, NJ.  Bringing the opportunity directly to the people who can help is one way to keep the supply fresh.  And it’s the right thing to do.

Generally, blood donors must be healthy*, be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 lbs.   *Healthy means that you feel well and can perform normal activities.  If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, healthy also means that you are being treated and the conditions are under control.[2]

The Bloodmobile will be parked in front of the showroom.  The following is the process to donate blood:

  • Make an appointment.  Call 856-853-8393 to set up a time for your donation.
  • Hydrate:  Make sure to drink plenty of fluids that day.
  • Wear comfortable clothes:  Wear clothing with sleeves that can easily be rolled up above the elbow.
  • Maintain healthy level of iron in your diet before donating:  If possible, include iron-rich foods in your diet, especially in the weeks before your donation.  Click here for a list of iron-rich foods.
  • Bring a list of medications you are taking:  The Red Cross will need to know about any prescription and/or over the counter medications that may be in your system.
  • Bring ID:  Bring either your donor’s card, driver’s license or two other forms of identification.
  • Bring a Friend:  Bring a friend so you can both enjoy the benefits of giving blood.
  • Relax:  Blood donation is simple and very safe so there is nothing to worry about.
